What Has Been Your Experience With Topiramite 50mg?
My Dr put me on Topiramite 3 weeks ago as a preventative. What difference! Will it last? I've only had one medium migraine since that Rizatriptan knocked down in a hour.
I think thats a pretty small dose. So hopefully that will do the trick for you. But I agree with ZB i had the worst brain fog. I couldnt speak to people. I was up to i think 200mg a day? But, i would rather be a zombie then have that pain. I was switched to quilipta and botox after my kidney stone. And that is not cheap. Lucky for me, i know my triggers now. I just saw my neuro last month for the last time because i moved to Georgia. I am cutting my quilipta in half. And hopefully will be done with botox soon too. I just cant drink alcohol, stay away from tomatoes and soy sauce and any salty food. And get a good nights sleep and stay hydrated. I hope to be off everything by the end of the year if possible. I dont like the side effects of any of the meds. Not gonna lie. Dont mind the smoother forehead from botox. But the 48 hours after are miserable for me.
I was on it for 20 years. It worked in the beginning then I started getting numbness in my hands and brain fog. I have been off it now for 2 years and I still have the brain fog.
I had a love/ hate with topirimate. It worked. But when i got to a higher dose. I had to quit driving. I was running into the wall. All the time! But the side effects of the medicine were better tolerated then 2-3 day migraines which i ended up in the ER a few times. I was on it for 3 years until I got a kidney stone. Lower dose did fine. I got up to the highest dose and became a zombie! Im glad its working for you! That is the best when you find a solution. Everyone is different. So dont get discouraged by my answer.
I started Topamax at 25mg per my neuro for 1 week and then increased it to 50mg. I started Sept 1, 2024. Tolerable side effects such as tingling in hands and feet. Definite brain fog and loss of words in the middle of important meeting but those side effects decreased in late Nov 2024. Unfortunately, another side effect reared its ugly head - GERD - in mid Oct and I reached out to my neuro. He told me that since I am on 50mg (a small dose), I can taper down to 25mg in a week and then wean off completely. I followed those instructions and the GERD did not go away (sought medical assistance from primary care physician) but my migraines came back....On Xmas day, I went back on 25mg Topamax and just eating a lot less due to the GERD and waiting to see PCP again. Hope this helps. Good luck!
Had an allergic reaction & can Not take it. My husband however Loves it & says it works Great for him.
