Applying For SSI Disability

A MyMigraineTeam Member asked a question 💭

Has anyone had any success applying for disability due to migraines? I've been having an awful time with migraines. The last 3 months have been the worst. I've missed many days of work as a result. I can't expect my employer to continue being understanding. Any advice?

Yes. I applied for SSI due to hearing loss yrs.ago & after Social Security finished reviewing all of my medical reports that they had gotten, I was approved for SSI & migraines was one of the reasons. I was under the care of a neurologist & had been for yrs. so there was quite a record. Good Luck

I filled out the paperwork myself. Got denied. Hired a lawyer and got approved on reconsideration. Didn't even have to see the judge.

I applied for SSDI when forced out of my job due to migraines caused by perfumes, detergents and plugins. I spent the three months on medical leave gathering details for my long term disability insurance application. However, I had daily migraines, plus Fibromyalgia, degenerative disc disease, scoliosis, IBS, unstable SI joints and arthritis in my spine, neck, feet and shoulders. In addition, I have syncope and AIWS with my migraines and optical auras. I was accepted first application because I followed my husband's instructions. 1) Leave no space blank. If it doesn't apply, write NA. They throw out any forms with any blanks without even reading it. 2) Tell them everything that's wrong. Don't assume they know how bad a migraine is. Write down that you puke, that you can't walk outside, you can't be around smells, etc. 3) Write small so you have room to say everything, but write legibly. They're looking for reasons to deny. Don't let bad handwriting be a reason. I actually had to write between the lines and up the margins, to have room. But do not write on the back of pages! 3) Don't exaggerate. Don't say 11+ out of 10. Be honest with your description because truthfully, we're sick enough without exaggerating! 4) Be concise. Tell your story clearly. 5) Have friends and family review it. Take their suggestions and rewrite your story until it is concise, clear, and tells your story well! 6) Be sure to mention how many sick days you've used too. 7) And get your doctors on board before you apply. Get letters from them in advance too.

I spent 3 months on my LTD application, and another 3 months on SSDI. Lucky for me my hubby and the LTD insurance company agent helped me clarify my story on the SSDI application because I was sick with bad migraines the entire time I worked on it. I literally treated the applications like my job. I worked on it everyday until it was ready, writing and rewriting. It was hard work, but I was accepted immediately.

I applied fo SSDI for Hearing Loss & Migraines & got it. Make sure on your Appl. you mention that Migraines are not just a Headache...They are a Neurological Disease.

Something I didn't mention years ago.... do not get off your health insurance when you are accepted for SSDI. Medicare does not kick in for a full 2 years, so stay on your husband's insurance or get on Obama are, whatever you can afford. I wasn't surprised by this because my hubby who had helped me apply, warned me. But I was shocked by the cost of commercial individual health insurance. It ate up half of my SSDI payment.
