Does Anybody Find That Their Appetite Increases Before And After A Migraine Attack.

A MyMigraineTeam Member asked a question 💭
Barnsley, UK

Before and after a migraine attack, I find that my appetite increases and I especially crave sweet foods such as chocolate, etc. Before I know it I am raiding the fridge which leaves me feeling full (and guilty - as I am supposed to be trying to loose weight). Does anyone have any tips or ideas of how I can try to suppress my appetite pre and post migraine. During the attack itself, I cannot stand to eat and I always feel too nauseous. Thank you.

During times I know I am likely to get a migraine (imminent weather changes, PMS) I'll takes some time to cut up fruit and other snacks and keep a plate in my fridge. It makes it so much easier when I'm stumbling around in pain and need to eat. It also makes it easy for my husband to know what he can bring me to help.

I just go with the craving. First you didn't eat during the migraine so your body is hungry. I also believe migraine burns a lot of calories. My craving used to be salty anything now it's sweets. I believe my migraines are hormone related. I find if I don't eat what I am craving I will eat everything and then still go to the store in the end and buy it. These days it is often fresh fruit. Apples or oranges or cherries if in season

Yeah I agree with @A MyMigraineTeam Member going with the cravings isn't bad at all. Your brain is probably craving the salt or sugar in the foods to help itself get through the migraine (not sure if that's medically accurate or not but it make me feel better about eating chocolate!)

Maybe find some sweets that you can suck on and so then you are getting a sugar hit without eating so much? Or get some dark chocolate & break it up into small amounts you can just let melt into your mouth? Hope that helps!

Yes I can't stop eating and it doesn't matter what it is. I prefer chocolate but try not to keep it in the house.
