I Think I'm Having Memory Loss From Daily Migraine Tension Headaches & Also From Taking Topiramate.
I have been taking 3 Topiramate tablets in the morning & 2 Topiramate tablets at night. Every 10 days, I'm decreasing the dosage by 1 tablet until.I'm taking none.
Whoa! That's a LOT of topiramate! Did a doctor prescribe that much?! I wouldn't be surprised that it is causing memory loss because it seems like it has a bunch of different side effects for people. Ask your doctor to consider a different med. Have you gone through the triptans yet? I'm on Aimovig and have not had any side effects at all.
I personally deal with memory loss too, but I don't know how much is medicine, migraines or brain injury. My migraines started as a kid after a fall to the back of my head, so any additional hit to my head can cause additional injuries. Since I've been in 11 car accidents (none my fault), several of those were serious ones that caused head hits. Plus, in June I fell again doing a faceplant, and split my face open. It was a hard enough hit that it shifted my C4 beyond C5, so they feel that further brain injury could have happened because of funny blank outs from time to time. Sort of like a short circuit, but it's only a weird pause over something I've known for decades. Then again, for me it could just be old age. Lol!
You definitely need to speak to your migraine specialist. Keep track of how often you're forgetting things too. When I started making note of things, it shocked me. My hubby works with brain injury survivors and he's keeping an eye on me.
Topiramate, or topamax, can also cause emotional responses. If you notice you're getting easily upset or crying over small things, it might be the meds. It affected me by setting off my PTSD, plus both my sister and her daughter reacted stronger to it with unexplainable crying jags.
I have memory issues too. I'm on Depakote--two in the morning and two at night. But I've also had an MRI that showed excessive white matter. The doc didn't know what that meant; just that there was a correlation.
I am getting older, but my memory is definitely worse than my sisters and we're each just two years apart.
If anybody can shed more light on this I'd be grateful.
My last MRI showed wmh. They first appeared on a 2018 MRI, but now that amount has doubled. My neuro providers keep telling me it's not a serious issue, but I think it just might be.
When was your last MRI, and did it show any white matter hypersensitivities?
