Medications
Please please let me know some names of medications that you have had some success with. I have tried a couple with not much success. I have found that botox works but I am unable to have health benefits at this time. When I did have benefits it was covered and life was not as painful š.
Hi Amber,
The prescription medications that have been the most effective for me are Relpax, Frova, and Nurtec.
Relpax and Frova are in the family of triptans and they can work for me even if the symptoms and pain have already started.
Nurtec is a different category of drugs ending in the syllable āpantsā and the most effective use for me is when Iām in a multi day episode, and I take it before the symptoms build the following day.
As far as over the counter, I am allergic to aspirin and the other NSAIDS so I am limited to Tylenol and Excedrin headache which is Tylenol, and caffeine. Sometimes, during a multi day episode, I will use that before the headache builds, or even a good cup of coffee.
I have other rescue medicationās at home, which I havenāt used yet due to my being intimidated by drugs that are unfamiliar to me.
I have injectable Imitrex and I have Fioricet which is Tylenol, caffeine, and a mild barbiturate.
I need to look into other rescue drugs to have available.
Also, I have something called a Medrol Pack which is a weeklong course of prednisone, which is for extended days of a migraine, and used to stop the cycle and avoid overuse of the Triptans.
I have not tried this yet.
I know Iām handing you a great deal of information and youāre welcome to ask me additional specific questions.
My heart goes out to everybody on this site because I know how hard it is to manage life with chronic migraines.
Sumatriptan (generic Imitrex) is cheap at Costco and works well for me as a rescue. Currently, gabapentin is helping me a lot for prevention.
I joined an online health group for $15.00 a month. They call my meds in at a local pharmacy with a discounted price. There are many meds I can't receive because of the state I live in and some are just to pricey no matter what, but it is a way to get triptans.
Otc meds that I use is tiger balm or lidocaine patches. They help take the edge off. A mix of benadryl and tylenol makes a sleep aide, which helps me to rest (if you are able) when one hits. Amazon sells ice caps in various price ranges that are super helpful too.
I have cluster attacks, as well, so I will down a red bull or monster coffee at first sign of an attack. This sometimes helps with a migraine too.
Good Luck!
Not to defer your question but I will suggest speaking with a neurologist or pain management doctor. The Botox for me didn't do nothing. I know allot of the readers swear by it but we are different. They have medicine for the nasal, injectables and infusion. It all depends on the degree of your migraines. I wish you the best luck.
I have a preventive and I take a prescribed cocktail at a infusion clinic that helps me for a couple of weeks.
