Triptan Overuse Rebound Headaches

A MyMigraineTeam Member asked a question 💭

What do you guys know about triptan overuse headaches?

I just learned of them from a nurse at my neurologist’s office. This had never been mentioned before by my neurologist and he prescribes me 30 rizatriptans per month and 7 frovatriptans per month, which covers my 20 migraines (if they decide to work). However, I had no idea that by taking the prescribed medication as directed, I could actually be causing more migraines. But if I don’t take them, I’m in excruciating pain and am… read more

Most of my rebound headaches actually happened more from fioricet and tramadol, but I would occasionally get rebound from triptans too.

@A MyMigraineTeam Member, Well you're are in luck because I had a triptan cardiac event for years, but nobody figured out what was causing it until I STOPPED triptans completely!! I was fainting a lot. It started with weird episodes, where it felt like someone was squeezing my chest and it would creep up into my throat. It felt like someone was trying to choke me, and then I would pass out. They started off randomly, but soon became a weekly affair. One day it literally lasted for 8 hours. I was home alone and spent the evening staying on the couch because I was afraid to get up and walk for fear of falling and hitting my head again. The fainting got worse and worse until I lost my job. Nothing showed up on tests and nobody put 2 and 2 together. It wasn't until I lost my job and my health insurance, and couldn't afford triptans anymore that slowly my fainting and episodes stopped. That's when I did my own research on side effects of triptans, and discovered it could cause cardiac issues. I've not had another episode like that since the year I lost my job. It certainly appears to me that it was the triptans! At the time what I was taking was Eletriptan, also known as Relpax.

Right. That's why everyone had such high hopes for the CGRPs. Supposedly no rebound headaches. Problem is finding a CGRP that works and you can afford.

I have been dealing actively with migraines/clusters since 1995-1997. I have had GP and not headache experienced Neurologist tell me about rebound affect of migraine meds(NON caffeine and NON painkillers and NON addictive).
My neurologist in AZ who specializes in migraines/clusters( he and his family has them) has been a Heaven sent advocate for me.
All I can say about rebound of Tryptans and such is that I have used them since 1997 and never had a rebound from any of them. I can take a tryptan every day for a week or longer and then not have a migraine/cluster and then not take one and I am fine. If I have a migraine/cluster and don’t catch it w tryptan or such AND Alleve or Advil, I will be in the emergency room and being treated as a druggy. So I hope that answers it.
