Migraines Getting In The Way Of Work

A MyMigraineTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hello! I’m on day two of a debilitating migraine. I’ve gotten them since I was a kid, but the last couple of months they have gotten worse. I’ve been missing work (dental assistant) and can’t help but feel mass amounts of guilt. No one there gets them, so I feel like no one understands how awful they are. Anyone else to through anything similar? I love my job and dread calling in, but some days I can’t get out of bed due to migraines. Any advice is much appreciated!

Migraines are covered under the FML act. I have intermittent leave. It protected my job and let all the bullies know that it is a valid medical diagnoses that incapacitates me.

- Coping Mechanisms: Some individuals use vacation days instead of sick days, work half days, or adjust their schedules around their migraine medications (source: My Perspective: Migraines Cost Me a Job and Made Me Redefine My Life | MyMigraineTeam).

- Work from Home: Working from home can be a practical option for some, allowing for flexible hours. However, screen time and bright lights can still be triggers (source: Member Perspective: Working From Home With Migraine | MyMigraineTeam).

- Financial Concerns: The financial impact of not being able to work due to migraines is a common concern. Some people have to stop working entirely, which can strain their financial situation (source: Working and Migraines | MyMigraineTeam).

- Health and Well-being: The stress of trying to manage work with migraines can take a toll on mental health, leading some to reconsider their job or take medical leave (source: Hiding Migraine Symptoms | MyMigraineTeam).

If you are not under the care of a neurologist you really need to be. I used to have to call out or leave early also. It is trial & error w/the meds. However that was over 10 yrs. ago. Today there are so many available treatment options available that no one should be suffering like back in the day. Also, educate yourself about migraines, if you have a full understanding then you can explain it to others. I don't want anyone to lose their job over something that is treatable. Migraines are not just a headache.

When I was working I was told I was making them up but like you I just couldn't lift my head from my pillow. No one in my work understood, I was a carer for 32 years.
