Spinal Tap

A MyMigraineTeam Member asked a question πŸ’

Has anyone had a spinal tap to help relieve the cerebral fluid that could be causing pressure, therefore causing migraines? I'm really scared to have this done.

I had one done 3yrs ago. It took the Dr (radiologist) so many tries to get any fluid out..he had to reposition my body 3xs sticking more than once each time. It was extremely painful. They warn you that there's a chance you will get a spinal headache and then you will have to get a blood patch done. This is the WORST MIGRAINE EVER!!!! SO I called my Neuro Dr and he told me to get to ER asap!! I had to go to OR, and the Dr (anesthesiologist) along with nurse and the nurse has you sit up legs dangling off the bed and she gave me a pillow to hug. She put in IV with catheter so Dr could draw my blood and patch one of the many holes the other Dr made. Dr honestly said which hole should he use...I would never ever recommend this to anyone. My Dr didn't even order for me. I asked him to order one hoping to find answers. If you don't 100% need one then don't get one

When I was hospitalized last year for migraines they did a spinal tap. It took over 20 times and another doctor had to come in and help pull my knees to my chest because I'm too fat to do it by myself. I was in severe pain for a couple days after from a migraine triggered by the ST and the pain from being poked so many times. Was told they didn't find anything.

Just to reassure you I'm a nurse & helped with lots of lumbar puncture's - you often get a headache afterwards but you also should get pain relief. I haven't heard about migraines being caused by excess fluid but a build up of fluids would def give you head pain!

Ask for an experienced doctor, tell them how worried you are and ask a friend to sit with you & hold your hand. Distraction techniques such as having to name animals A-Z might help.

I ended up talking about cheese to distract the last patient I helped!
