Maxalt (Rizatriptan) for Migraine

Overview
Maxalt is a prescription drug approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat acute migraine headaches with or without aura in people age 6 and older. Maxalt is also known by its drug name, Rizatriptan.

Maxalt is a triptan. Triptans are believed to work by constricting blood vessels and reducing inflammation.

How do I take it?
Maxalt is generally taken once or twice a day.

Maxalt comes in the form of tablets and orally disintegrating tablets.

Side effects
The FDA-approved label for Maxalt lists common side effects including weakness, fatigue, drowsiness, dizziness, and sensation of pain or pressure.

Rare but serious side effects listed for Maxalt include stroke, cerebral hemorrhage (bleeding), serotonin syndrome, medication overuse headache, and ischemia (insufficient blood supply) to the heart, spleen, or gastrointestinal system.
