Has Anyone Been Given All Sorts Of Off-label Meds For Their Headaches?
I mean anti-seizure meds, anti-depressants, heart medicine.
They initially put me on amitriptyline.... the side effects all hit.me at once, including intense nausea and made me borderline narcoleptic during work (I work a heavy labor job around equipment upwards of 3,000 lbs) after 3 weeks of no migraine improvement and all the extra issues, I stopped taking it. Then they offered muscle relaxers at an even lower dosage because I'm so sensitive to medicines. I refused since it would be hazardous around my work.
Yes, my neurologist o
Put me on an Alzheimer's memory drug. I took it for 2 months. My new hair stopped growing in. There was a hole in my scalp. The med wasn't helping me memory either. I tapered off the med. Taking Topiromate for Migraines. It's a seizure and binge eating med. It can cause memory problems. Migraines can cause memory problems. Clonopin might have been helping me avoid Migraines. Because when I had to stop taking it cuz it's a Benzodiazopine (they've been associated with Alzheimer's) I got tons of Migraines. Buprinorphine caused Migraines for me. Had to take that med to get off Methadone. Never had Migraines on Methadone. But now have Migraines on Tylenol #3 & Tramadol (a synthetic opioid). Am not liking to take any meds now due to their side effects!
I take metroprolol and was put on sumatriptan, but make my bp go in the 180's so no Triptans for me.
Yes! I take Topiramate, an anti-seizure med. Plus Gabapentin, Cymbalta, and for immediate relief I have an eye drop, Timolol, that actually goes under the tongue. Then, for relief on days none of these work I have Olanzapine. I've only used that twice though. I break one in half and in 1/2 hour if I need to I take the other half. I have a headache specialist. So, I consider myself lucky. Before him, I was on the usual triptans and such. But I have a terrible family history of heart disease and I have had a bout of heart failure. So the triptans are bad for me. So he changed everything around.
I use gabapentin along with a protocol of vitamins and herbs as prescribed by the Headache Clinic at U of Washington. The gabapentin seems to help and I can dose according to how I'm feeling and amount of migraines.
